John F. Leonard

John F. Jack Leonard, 84, of Clinton passed away Monday, April 16th, 2007 at the Alverno Health Care Facility in Clinton. John was born July 18th, 1922 in Clinton, son of the late Thomas and Angeline (Tigges) Leonard. He married Helen E. Driscoll on June 19th, 1943 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Clinton. She preceded him in death May 13th, 2002. John was a 1941 graduate of St. Marys High School. He worked as a machinest for the Chicago Northwest railroad industry and later Alcoa. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving his country proudly during World War II. John enjoyed swimming, biking, walking, horseshoes, fishing, bingo and going to the riverboat casino playing on the quarter poker machines. Most importantly he loved to play with his grandchildren. After his retirement he served as a Eucharistic Minister for Prince of Peace Parish taking communion to and visiting the local nursing homes and homebound parishoners. Survivors include his children, David (Mary) Leonard, Ottumwa, Eugene Leonard, Reno NV, Mary (Peter) Kaup, Clinton, John (Trude) Leonard, St. Louis, MO., Marcia Leonard, Clinton, Barbara Peters of Clinton, Daniel (Carla) Leonard, Helen (Mark) Peters, both of Clinton; and the daughter in his heart Jill (Brian) Lemke; 13 grandchildren, four great grandchildren; four sisters, Bernice (Earl) Schluns, Dolores (Frank) Simmons, Kathleen (Lloyd) Clouse, Marion Spooner all of Clinton. Besides his wife Helen and his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald and Raymond Leonard. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 am on Saturday, April 21st, 2007 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Clinton. Pallbearers will be Lyle Bronkema, Dorance Cox, Charles Horner, Earl Farrell, Benito Gonzales, and Mark Mangin. Honorary Pallbearers will be his grandchildren and great grandchildren; Jeff and Steve Leonard, Andrea Kleinschmidt, Leslie Kaup, Nick and Allison Leonard, Nathan Sack, Amy, Meghan, and Andrew Peters, Samantha Spadaro, Stephen, Jeremy, and Michael Peters, Zach and Ethan Lemke; Meghan and Carson Leonard; Cale and Hallie Leonard; Ethan Spadaro; and Aleina Kleinschmidt. Burial will be in the St. Mary Cemetery, Clinton. Friends may call on Friday from 4-8 PM at the Lemke Funeral Home, Lyons Chapel and again on Saturday from 9:30 AM until the time of procession to the church. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Prince of Peace Parish Building Fund. The Lemke Funeral Home & Cremation Services are in charge of the arrangements. The Knights of Columbus will hold a Rosary Service at 4 PM on Friday at the Funeral Home. Online condolences at www.lemkefuneralhome.net
