Leila Jean Orr (Felten)

Leila J. Orr, 89, of Bellevue, passed away Wednesday morning, March 4, 2015, at Mill Valley Care Center in Bellevue, Iowa. A Christian Funeral Service will be held at 2:00pm. Saturday March 7, at First Presbyterian Church in Bellevue. Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Maquoketa, Iowa. Visitation for Leila will be held from 4:00 7:00 p.m. Friday evening at Hachmann Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Bellevue and again Saturday morning after 1:00pm at the church. Leila was born on August 20, 1925 in Maquoketa, Iowa, daughter of Herman and Helen (Walrod) Felten. Leila grew up on a rural farm east of Maquoketa. She graduated Valedictorian from Maquoketa High School in 1943. Following graduation she started her teaching career in Jackson County schools of Andrew Cornelius and Bridgeport. She married Thomas Orr on July 4, 1948 in Maquoketa. He passed away October 3, 1995. She and her husband farmed near Maquoketa, Lowden and Zwingle. In 1957 she returned to teaching grades K-4 in Zwingle. In 1964 the family moved to Dubuque where she continued teaching at Prescott and Lincoln schools. While teaching and raising a family she earned her BA teaching degree from the University of Dubuque, graduating in 1972. Later that year they moved to Marshalltown where she taught elementary education until retiring to Bellevue in 1988. In retirement she loved spending time with her grandchildren, attending her daughter Marys many musical programs, knitting, substitute teaching, and doing jigsaw puzzles. She and her husband enjoyed traveling which included many gun shows throughout the country with her brother and sister in-law Dick and Toots. Those left to honor her memory include her children, Mary (Max) Reed, of Bellevue, Bob (Kathy) Orr, of Peosta, and Carol Orr of Davenport; 6 grandchildren Jennifer (Rick) Walters, Shawn (Tammy) Orr, Joel (Emily) Orr, Chad (Sarah Tressel) Orr, Scott Reed, and Kemis Hoyt; 12 great-grandchildren; brothers Lyle and Rex Felten of Maquoketa and Donald(Betty) Felten of Delavan, WI; in-laws Gale Stickley, Marilee Weuste of Maquoketa, Dick (Joyce) Orr of Arab, Alabama, and Barb (Larry ) Koranda of Monmouth, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, great granddaughter Reece Walters, brother William Felten, sister Donna Stickley, three sister in-laws, and one brother in-law. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Leilas name. The family would like to give a special thank you to the staff at Mill Valley Care Center and Dr. Hunter for the care and compassion shown to Leila.
