Mary L. Cheney (Gibbs)

Mary L. Cheney, 79, of Bellevue, Iowa, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Tuesday morning, December 22, 2015 at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am, Monday, December 28 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bellevue. Friends and family may call from 2:00 to 5:00 pm, Sunday evening at the Hachmann Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Bellevue, and again Monday morning from 9:00 to 10:00 am also at the funeral home. Mary was born on March 4, 1936 in LaMotte, daughter of Edmund and Gertrude (Etringer) Gibbs She married Larry L. Cheney on October 5, 1957. They were married for 32 years. Larry passed away September 11, 1990. Mary was a loved and loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She enjoyed Saturday nights out with her church lady friends, sitting on her porch to watch activities at the park, and visiting with passers-by. Most of all, Mary enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. Those left to honor her memory include her five children, Linda (Gary) Ackermann, of Bellevue, Sherri (Mike) Noonan, of Delhi, Iowa, Shelley (Mark) Ackermann, of Ames, Iowa, Brian (Jennifer) Cheney, of Northborough, Massachusetts, and Angie (John) Long, of Bellevue; 10 grandchildren 5 great grandchildren; four brothers, Harold (Joyce), Ed (Karen), Larry (Carolyn), Steve (Mary); a sister, Algean Budde; two sisters in-law Rosella and Irma Gibbs; brother in-law Vernon Hunstad; and many nieces and nephews. Mary is preceded in death by her parents; husband; and two brothers, Lloyd and Donald, and sister, Dorothy Weinschenk. Memorials may be directed to Mainstream Living Inc. in Ames, Iowa, which provides loving group home services for Mary's grandson, Andy Ackermann.
