Naomi was born on August 6, 1934, in Springbrook, Iowa, the daughter of Benjamin and Marcella (Sturm) Scheckel. After the death of her dad and brother Allen, it was unfortunately necessary for Naomi to drop out of high school to help run the family farm. She married Lavern Till on November 24, 1956, with whom she had seven children. After the birth of her children, Naomi returned to school and earned her GED. From there, she attended Capri Cosmetology College in Dubuque, Iowa. Naomi had a strong creative spirit and found her outlet when she began weaving rugs, creating works of art. Weaving rugs combined her resourcefulness and her creativity. She took fabric remnants and wove them into rugs. Sometimes when she could not sleep, she would get up in the wee hours of the night and weave. She created hundreds, if not thousands, of rugs that have been spread out across the upper Midwest. Naomi sold some of her rugs, but the vast majority were donated to charities such as Camp Courageous in Monticello and others. She was a loving homemaker for her husband and children. She enjoyed sewing, growing houseplants, bowling, and singing her heart out in the church choir.
Those left to honor her memory include six children: Brian (Catherine), of Coralville, Iowa, Annette Ernst (Greg Schmidt), of Prairie Village, Kansas, Michelle (Mike) Daugherty, of Bellevue, Iowa, Paul of Andrew, Iowa, Chuck (Darla), of Dubuque, Iowa, and Charlotte (Brian) Beck of Ankeny, Iowa, 12 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, four sisters: Carma Weiss of Galena, Illinois, Doris (Stephen) Trenkamp, of Preston, Iowa, Marci Hardin of Durant, Oklahoma, and Judy Scheckel of Burnsville, North Carolina, her brother Dennis (Sandra) Scheckel of Dewitt, Iowa, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Lavern, son Patrick, brothers Adrian and Allen, and sister Mary Sullivan.
Memorials may be directed to Camp Courageous in Monticello, Iowa in Naomi’s memory.
